چکیده

This paper investigates the relationship between wealth and entrepreneurship of middleand older-age individuals in the United States, a group whose wealth holdings and rates of selfemployment are substantially higher than those of younger individuals. Using longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study that span over 14 years, we find entry into selfemployment increases with total wealth across the entire wealth distribution. The positive relationship persists with adjustments for health status, risk aversion and for permanent earnings – a proxy for unobserved ability. The positive association holds for liquid assets and is stronger for entry into businesses requiring substantial capital investment than those requiring low initial capital. We also find workers with access to wealth through a lump-sum distribution option of an employer-provided pension plan are 26 percent more likely to become self-employed than workers without this option.

Wealth Constraints and Self-Employment: Evidence from Birth Order

I revisit the question of whether entrepreneurs face liquidity constraints in business formation. The principle challenge is that wealth is correlated with unobserved ability, and adequate instruments are often difficult to identify. This paper uses the son’s birth order as an instrument for household wealth. The instrument would likely not be useful in Western data, but it is in many non-Weste...

Cash Constraints and Business Start-ups: Deutschmarks versus Dollars

In this paper we analyze microdata to explore differences in the rates at which American and German workers leave their salaried jobs to become self-employed. We document that the rate of self-employment is lower in Germany than in the U.S., and the rate of transition from wage-earning to self-employment is lower as well. We find evidence that German workers face liquidity constraints that are ...

Transitions to Self-Employment at Older Ages: The Role of Wealth, Health, Health Insurance, and Other Factors

Relatively little research has been devoted to studying self-employment among older workers although they make up a disproportionate share of the self-employed workforce. This study uses 5 waves of panel data from the Health and Retirement Study to investigate the determinants of labor force transitions to self-employment at older ages. We estimate a multinomial logit model of transitions from ...

Economic insecurity and fertility intentions: the case of Italy

We aim to provide an explanation for the combination of the relatively low female participation rates and lowest-low fertility levels in Italy. Starting from the assumption that childbearing decisions also depend on uncertainty about future employment, income, and wealth, we empirically assess how fertility intentions are affected by: 1) the deprivation of a quality job, which may severely comp...
